Loyola University denies Turning Point USA chapter recognition

Loyola University New Orleans’ student government has voted to deny recognition of a proposed chapter of Turning Point USA as an official student organisation on campus.
The university's internal policies state that the Student Government Association (SGA) oversees the chartering process. When the application for a new chapter was brought forward, reports said nearly 100 students attended the SGA Senate meeting to express opposition. Rosalina Framboise, a freshman at the university, described Turning Point USA as being “in direct opposition” to “the core values of Saint Ignatius and the Society of Jesus at large,” citing remarks made by the organisation’s founder, Charlie Kirk, including that “queer people are trying to corrupt your children” and that “transgenderism and gender fluidity are lies that hurt people and abuse kids.”
The decision means the group will not have access to university resources or the ability to reserve campus spaces.
Turning Point USA has experienced rapid growth since its founder, Charlie Kirk, was murdered last month. The organisation reported receiving more than 50,000 applications from colleges and high schools seeking to start new chapters following Kirk’s death.
In response to this surge, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced a partnership with Turning Point USA to ensure high-school students across the state can establish their own chapters. He also warned that state officials would intervene should schools attempt to obstruct the process.
Loyola’s decision has drawn criticism from conservatives nationwide. Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry posted the university’s mission statement on X, highlighting its reference to welcoming “students from diverse backgrounds.” He commented, “Hmmm… so much for welcoming students with diverse backgrounds. I’ll be taking a look at this to ensure all voices are heard on campuses across Louisiana!”
Responding to the controversy, Loyola University New Orleans told Fox News that “the chartering of new student organisations, including Turning Point USA, follows a student-led, peer-to-peer process administered by the Student Government Association (SGA).” The university explained that “the SGA Senate made a recommendation to the SGA President on the proposed organisation’s application for recognition, and the SGA President upheld the recommendation.”
The statement added that the student leaders of the proposed organisation “have been notified of their right to appeal the decision through the SGA Court of Review, as outlined in Loyola’s Student Organisation Handbook,” concluding that Loyola “will continue to support the student-led process as it moves through its next steps.”
